Explanation: Through David Ives play “Sure Thing” he reveals that our lives are made up of moments and we can easily destroy those moments by revealing who we are or by lying about ourselves. Honesty is a fickle friend. The play is almost like a person running an event through their head over and over trying to make it work. Sometimes we become obsessed with a moment that didn’t work out the way we wanted it to. It’s all in the timing. Within in our lives, we all have had moments that didn’t go the way we expected them. The time you asked someone out and you were slapped and kneed somewhere painful. Or the time when were really excited about the new Digimon movie and no one else cared. . .at all. The time you could have won something if only you had done ten things differently. Think of a moment that didn't go as expected. It can be happy, sad, or neutral. Maybe you lied to make things better or you revealed too much information and thing went wrong. Once you have that moment in your head you are going to write about it three different ways.
The First Way: The Story (50 Words Minimum) Just explain the situation as it happened. Reveal your inner thoughts, hopes, feelings, etc.
The Second Way: It Just Got Worse (50 Words Minimum) Rewrite the story as if the worst case scenario had come true. What else could have happened. Change what you said or did or both this time around. Make sure you have a realistic worst case scenario (Only put in death if it were are real possibility.).
The Third Way: Rainbows and Lollipops (50 Words Minimum) Rewrite the situation as if everything worked perfectly. What would you have changed for the perfect outcome. Again be realistic (no moments should with a date with a supermodels).
We have taught this senior English class for over seven years. Every year the class is different. Many of the lessons are the same, but it's the students who add the diversity and the original feel to the class. You get back what you put into the class.
